Chapter 10

Acouple of evenings later, Cody asked Lyndy out for dinner. He had framed it as an opportunity to discuss her theories and update her on the case, but Lyndy sensed it was also a chance for them to relax and connect outside the pressures of the investigation.

They chose to meet at Magnolia’s Bistro, a charming restaurant nestled in the heart of Anderson Springs. The bistro had a warm, inviting atmosphere, with soft lighting and cozy booths. The walls were adorned with vintage photographs of the town, giving it a nostalgic feel. The aroma of freshly baked bread and simmering sauces filled the air, making Lyndy's mouth water as she walked in.

Cody was already seated at a corner booth when she arrived. He stood up, a smile spreading across his face as he greeted her. “Hey, Lyndy. Glad you could make it.”

“Thanks for inviting me, Cody. This place looks wonderful,” Lyndy replied, sliding into the booth opposite him.

A waiter soon appeared, handing them menus and taking their drink orders. Lyndy scanned the menu, noting the tempting options: pan-seared salmon with a lemon dill sauce, roasted chicken with garlic mashed potatoes, and a vegetarian risotto with wild mushrooms.

“Everything looks so good,” she remarked, glancing up at Cody.

“I highly recommend the chicken,” Cody said, his eyes twinkling with amusement. “But the salmon’s pretty great too.”

After placing their orders, Cody leaned back, his expression turning serious. “I wanted to update you on the case. The metal flecks we found in Calvin’s head were iron from a pipe. But as you suspected, that’s a common item and doesn’t give us much to go on.”

Lyndy nodded, her thoughts momentarily shifting from the delicious smells wafting through the bistro to the grim reality of their investigation. “So, we’re back to square one with the murder weapon. It’s frustrating, but I’m sure there’s something we’re missing.”

Cody reached across the table, gently placing his hand over hers. “We’ll figure it out, Lyndy. We just have to keep digging.”

Their drinks arrived—iced tea for Lyndy and a local craft beer for Cody. They clinked glasses, a silent toast to their partnership and determination.

As they sipped their drinks, the waiter brought out a basket of warm, crusty bread accompanied by a small dish of herbed olive oil. Lyndy tore off a piece, savoring the crisp exterior and soft, fluffy inside.

“This is amazing,” she said, her eyes closing briefly in appreciation.

Cody grinned. “I told you this place was good. Wait until you try the main course.”

Their conversation shifted back to the case, but with a more relaxed tone. They discussed possible motives, suspects, and the significance of the fake eggs. Lyndy shared her thoughts on the button she had found and the variations in the gold paint.

The waiter returned with their entrees. Lyndy’s pan-seared salmon was perfectly cooked, with a crispy skin and tender, flaky flesh. It was served with a side of roasted vegetables and a lemon dill sauce that added a bright, tangy contrast. Cody’s roasted chicken looked equally delicious, the garlic mashed potatoes and rich gravy complementing the juicy, flavorful meat.
